HyKit is at the forefront of the hydrogen power revolution. Our mission is to design and manufacture modular agile infrastructure to store, transport and dispense green hydrogen at point of use.

We bring significant expertise in Hydrogen systems and are building a dedicated team to deliver key infrastructure needed to support Hydrogen powered equipment.

Our first product will be released under a joint venture with JCB, mobile hydrogen refuellers to support JCB’s green product transition. HyKit will manufacture these products at our new facility in Oxfordshire.

Location 

HyKit is has a dedicated premises in Bicester, where it is developing its products and preparing for series manufacture.

Job Description

Reporting Line

The Prototyping Technician will report to the Production Manager.

Department Overview

The Manufacturing function within HyKit is responsible for ensuring the on-time, on-cost and on-specification delivery of products. It is part of the wider Operations function, which includes Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Facilities, Operational Support and Finance.

The Role

As a Prototyping Technician, you will play a key role in the assembly, installation, and maintenance of hydrogen storage systems and related equipment. You will be responsible for ensuring that all products are built to specification, meet safety standards, and are delivered on time. The ideal candidate will have hands-on mechanical skills, an understanding of manufacturing processes, and a keen attention to detail.

The Prototyping Technician role is a key bridge between design and production – building R&D test systems and preproduction products to quality and giving feedback to the engineering teams to enable smooth production launch. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assembly & Installation:
    • Assemble hydrogen storage equipment and related components according to engineering drawings, specifications, and standard operating procedures.
    • Install components, ensuring proper alignment, wiring, and integration of systems.
    • Conduct quality checks on finished assemblies to ensure all equipment meets functional and safety standards.
  • Testing & Calibration:
    • Perform initial testing of equipment to ensure all systems are working correctly.
    • Conduct pressure tests, leak tests, and other safety-related checks to ensure reliability and safety.
    • Calibrate hydrogen storage systems as required to meet operational parameters.
  • Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
    • Perform preventive maintenance tasks on equipment and machinery.
    • Diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctions or faults in the assembly process or equipment.
    • Repair or replace faulty parts and components as necessary.
  • Documentation & Reporting:
    • Engage and feedback to all engineering teams on aspects of design, especially ease of manufacture and accuracy of build instructions
    • Complete all necessary paperwork, including assembly logs, test records, and maintenance reports.
    • Ensure that production documentation is up to date and accurate, with clear records of modifications or changes.
  • Collaboration & Safety Compliance:
    • Work closely with engineers, designers, and other production staff to ensure that the build process is streamlined and meets production targets.
    • Adhere to safety protocols and maintain a clean, safe work environment.
    • Follow industry standards and best practices for hydrogen storage system assembly and operation.

Person Specification

Education, Qualifications and Experience

REQUIRED

  • Proven experience in a similar manufacturing or assembly role, preferably in the hydrogen, energy, or industrial sectors.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical assembly skills with the ability to read technical drawings.
  • Experience with tools and machinery used in manufacturing and assembly processes, including power tools, hand tools, and assembly equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and procedures, particularly in high-pressure and hazardous material environments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

PREFERRED

  • Experience of working in a low volume high complexity manufacturing environment.
  • Experience of working with design and development engineers in the early stages of a project.
  • Experience of working with high pressure gases and ATEX requirements.

Key Skills

TECHNICAL

  • Strong technical skills in mechanical and/or electrical build
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings to translate into build steps
  • Ability to follow detailed standard operating procedures to build a complex product

Additional Requirements

  • Willingness to travel occasionally to meet with suppliers or customers, to support supply chain and engineering teams.

Work Location

This role is a full-time role based at our Bicester HQ and Manufacturing facility.  Travel to visit suppliers and partners may be necessary occasionally.
