HYKIT launches mobile hydrogen refueller as Jo Bamford expands UK hydrogen infrastructure ambitions

HYKIT has launched its first production-ready Mobile Hydrogen Refueller, the MHR-X75, alongside a new advanced manufacturing facility in Oxfordshire. Designed to bring hydrogen refuelling directly to construction, transport, agriculture and industrial sites, the trailer-mounted system can support up to seven hydrogen-powered vehicles or machines with rapid refuelling times of just 5–15 minutes. The launch marks a significant step forward in developing the infrastructure needed to accelerate hydrogen adoption across hard-to-electrify sectors and support the UK's growing hydrogen economy.

BICESTER, Oxfordshire — Hydrogen infrastructure specialist HYKIT has unveiled its first production-ready Mobile Hydrogen Refueller the MHR-X75 and officially opened a new advanced manufacturing facility in Oxfordshire, marking a significant milestone in the UK’s growing hydrogen economy.

The launch event, held at HYKIT’s new purpose-built factory in Bicester, brought together industry leaders, partners and stakeholders to showcase the company’s latest hydrogen technologies and outline plans to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission power solutions across construction, agriculture, transport, aviation, MHE and industrial sectors.

HYKIT, a joint venture between HydraB Group, JCB and investment firm HyCap, has been established to deliver the critical storage, compression and refuelling infrastructure required to support the widespread deployment of hydrogen-powered equipment and vehicles.

At the centre of the launch was the debut of the Mobile Hydrogen Refueller – MHR-X75, a fully integrated, trailer-mounted hydrogen refuelling system designed to bring fuel directly to operational sites where fixed infrastructure is unavailable or impractical.

Combining hydrogen storage and dispensing within a single transportable unit, the MHR-X75 has a total hydrogen capacity of 75kg and can support up to seven hydrogen-powered vehicles or machines simultaneously. Refuelling can be completed in approximately 5 to 15 minutes, allowing operators to maintain productivity while transitioning away from diesel-powered equipment.

Speaking at the launch, HYKIT Director of Engineering Dr John Vickers said the industry’s greatest challenge is no longer hydrogen technology itself, but the infrastructure required to support deployment.

“Hydrogen adoption isn’t being held back by technology; it’s being held back by infrastructure,” he said. “With the MHR-X75, we’re removing that barrier by enabling customers to deploy hydrogen refuelling exactly where their equipment is working, without needing a fixed supply.”

Summarising the company’s mission, Dr Vickers captured the significance of the day’s announcements in a simple phrase that reflects HYKIT’s wider ambition: “HYKIT is moving hydrogen from promise to practice.”

Designed for demanding industrial environments, the MHR-X75 features touchscreen controls, cloud-connected diagnostics, real-time performance monitoring and integrated safety systems including leak detection and emergency shutdown capability. The unit is certified to TPED, ADR and UK CDG standards.

The refueller forms part of HYKIT’s broader hydrogen ecosystem strategy, which encompasses compression, storage and refuelling technologies designed to provide a scalable alternative to traditional diesel infrastructure.

The product launch coincided with the opening of HYKIT’s new manufacturing facility in Bicester, where the company has created 30 high-skilled jobs. The site includes advanced manufacturing capabilities and a specialist clean room to support production of modular hydrogen systems for a range of applications.

The MHR-X75 is the first product to emerge from the facility, with more than 90 per cent of its components sourced from UK and European suppliers, supporting the development of a domestic hydrogen supply chain.

Clean energy entrepreneur Jo Bamford CBE, whose HydraB Group is a partner in HYKIT alongside JCB and HyCap, described the launch as a major step toward building a complete hydrogen economy in Britain.

“Hydrogen will only succeed if we build the infrastructure to support it,” Bamford said. “For too long the conversation has focused purely on vehicles and machinery, but without refuelling, transport, compression and supply systems, adoption simply cannot scale.

“HYKIT is the missing piece of that puzzle. This business is about creating the real-world hydrogen ecosystem needed to decarbonise sectors where battery technology alone cannot deliver the operational performance industry demands.”
Bamford added that the company is focused not only on reducing emissions but also on strengthening UK manufacturing capability and supply chains.

“We are building that ecosystem here in Britain, and in doing so we are creating highly skilled manufacturing jobs, developing UK supply chains and positioning the country to compete in one of the most important industrial transitions of our generation,” he said.

Industry interest in hydrogen continues to grow, particularly in sectors where electrification remains challenging due to power requirements, operating cycles or remote working conditions. HYKIT believes mobile, rapidly deployable infrastructure will play a crucial role in enabling businesses to adopt hydrogen-powered machinery while maintaining operational flexibility.

The company sees opportunities across construction, agriculture, logistics, transport, temporary power generation, industrial operations and marine applications as organisations seek practical pathways toward net-zero targets.

With production now underway in Bicester and the MHR-X75 entering the market, HYKIT says it is focused on delivering the infrastructure backbone needed to support hydrogen adoption at scale and help establish a fully integrated hydrogen network spanning production, distribution, storage and refuelling.
